Cliff is blinded by a white flash, and when his vision returns, he is standing in a 50s style diner. The floor has a black and white checkered design. In fact, everything in the room is in grayscale, except for Cliff and the light of three spotlights. A blue spotlight is shining down on Cliff, and a red spotlight is shining down on each of two figures standing across from him.

The left figure is Charles Alset, Cliff’s father. He appears to be in his early twenties. The figure on the right is Francina, Cliff’s mother. Both are dressed in retro clothing, nothing that looks too strange on them. It is not until they open their mouths that something seems amiss—their teeth are coated black.

“Cliff, what a surprise to see you,” Charles says. His voice is very deep and gravelly. He blinks slowly twice, then quickly once. Then he blinks normally again.
“You haven’t spoken with us in so long,” Francina says sweetly.

“How’s Angela?” Charles asks.

“I’ve heard that Hollis Brown is speaking with you now,” Francina starts. She exhales a deep sigh. “I hope this doesn’t offend you, but I slept with Hollis Brown once. But don’t worry, Charles is your father.”

“I didn’t sleep with Hollis Brown’s wife, though,” Charles says, with a slight air of pride.

“I’ve heard that you’re doing well in Stakeford,” Francina continues. “Everything I hear about you is so, so good. I’m so very proud of my son.”

Charles says abruptly, “There are three groups of three with gifts in Stakeford. You are one of the three of the third order, the lower order. But that’s not why you’re seeing us right now. You are special in other ways that the others who are experiencing these dreams are not.”

“Mr. Redman is threatening me,” Francina says, but it is not Francina’s voice this time. The voice is deep and belongs to a young man.

“Son, someone is going to die tonight, but you can save ‘em,” Charles says. “All you have to do is tell us the name of the person you want to save. If you say the right name, the name of the person who is meant to die tonight, you will stop the murder.”

“But, dear, you must warn him about the other possibility,” Francina says, looking toward Charles imploringly.

Suddenly, a bright white light shines forth from the windows in the diner. Additionally, Cliff’s attention is drawn to an oven in the kitchen behind the counter, where a yellow spotlight is now focused. A knocking sound is coming from inside the oven.

“Son, if you say the right name, you’ll stop the murder,” Charles says with increasing urgency. “But if you say the wrong name, something terrible will happen to that person!”

“I know you’ll make the right decision, dear,” Francina says encouragingly. “But if you don’t, if you don’t…”

There is a gunshot from somewhere outside the diner. Charles and Francina turn around suddenly, toward the door. Francina cries out and then screams, “Mr. Redman!”

Charles shouts, “Cliff! Say the name! For God’s sake, if you’re gonna say it, say it now!”

Cliff’s parents then collapse into two piles of salt. There is another bang on the oven door, then another. Cliff is suddenly overwhelmed by the notion that if he does not say the name now, it will be too late. Cliff swallows hard and decides what to do next.

Cliff has one opportunity here. All you have to do is say one name. Your post should contain just the name of the person you think will be killed next, and nothing else. If you guess correctly, the person will be saved. If you guess incorrectly, however, the person you chose will face great misfortune in the imminent future. If you post “…” or simply do not post in this thread, it will be assumed that Cameron is not going to try to save the next victim.

This thread will be open until the end of the month. You have until then to post the name of the person you will try to save. The last day you can post a name here is 01/29. You only have one chance.

Two things happen suddenly and simultaneously: the oven door flies open, and a body falls limp to the floor; at the same time, the door leading into the diner flies open and a different body falls limp in front of Cliff’s father and mother.

The body that was hurled out of the oven is the body of Brandy Smith.

The body that was thrown into the diner is the body of a dark-skinned man with corn rows.

Charles slaps his hands on his knees and begins to laugh, while Francina stands completely frozen—unbreathing, unblinking, unthinking, unfeeling, unloving, unrealing, unresponding.

Charles’s laughter is broken up by coughing and hacking. He spits up more of the same black gunk that covers his teeth, and this black, semi-liquid filth splatters onto the checkered diner floor.

Then, in an instant, Charles and Francina are gone. No transition, no fade-out. Cliff and the bodies of Brandy Smith and the dark-skinned man with corn rows remain. Both reach out a hand toward Cliff, from their different points on the floor. As they stretch their arms, pain rips through the expressions on their faces. Out of their open mouths, each begins to scream, and their screams intensify and blend together, until their sounds become one sound: the sound of a trumpet blaring.

Cliff wakes up with a jolt, but the trumpet sound does not completely fade away for about another fifteen seconds.

Cliff finds in his hand a red die, each side of which displays five dots.
