Samson's (02/06, 11:05 am)

Post by Hollis Brown on Sun Jan 31, 2016 5:45 pm

Inside the local clothing store, business is slow as usual. A woman in a black suit, wearing a tie that looks like a fish, is talking hurriedly with Samson, who appears to be struggling to follow her speech. They are standing in the corner of the store, away from the counter, which is currently being run by a tall woman with a medium build and a soft expression. She has medium-length brown hair, brown eyes, and a mole by her left ear. She is wearing a black and navy blue blouse, blue jeans, and brown leather shoes.

Samson Jr. is folding up pants and placing them on corresponding shelves, while his brother Reggie helps hang up shirts.

Jackson pulled up to Samson's store. Pulling his hi-vis coat tightly around him, he hopped out of his truck and jogged inside quickly. It was a chilly day. The sunglasses he wore fogged up almost instantly the moment he entered into the store. He slipped his sunglasses off his face and onto the top of his head. He looked around, seeing the store was mostly empty. Stifling a yawn, he moved to the counter. Giving a smile to the lady standing there, he said, "Hey there, I've got an order for coveralls that should have come in. I'm here to pick them up."

The woman furrows her brow for a second, and then nods. "Jackson, right?" She points at him. She makes a "bang" motion with her hand. "It'll be just a second." She turns around and heads through a door behind her.

After about thirty seconds, she returns with the coveralls. She sets them on the counter, between her and Jackson. She takes a quick, deep breath, and looks at the screen on the register. Her eyes then flick back to Jackson.

"I'm Joann. Joann Eberstark." She extends her hand over the counter. "Samson's brother. Just came into town a couple of days ago."

Jackson twitched slightly as the woman banged her hand on the counter. He chuckled softly to himself as she disappeared through the door. Jackson looked around and saw the two Ackermann boys working. He threw a friendly wave to them, before turning once he heard the woman return with his coveralls. "Well thank you Joann," Jackson said warmly. He gripped her hand firmly but not too tight and shook it firmly, "And yeah, I'm Jackson. If you're Samson's sister, I guess I'd say welcome back to town. Wish it were under uh... better circumstances." Jackson's tone took a more solemn turn as his voice went quieter. Jackson looked to the two boys for a moment, then back to Joann. "I bet the boys were eager to see their aunt?"

As Joann sighs, her mouth forms a genuine smile. "Well, one of the two was. Reggie's a real doll. Sammy Jr.'s..." She lowers her voice into a whisper just loud enough for Jackson to hear and no one else. "Sammy Jr.'s a real pain in the ass." Her gaze drifts over toward where the boys are. "Just like his father. He reminds me so much of Samson, when we were growing up."

She looks back at Jackson. "Anyway, nice meeting you. I'm bad with names, so I'll probably forget your name within the hour. Nope, wait... I actually have already forgotten it. But I'll remember your face. I'm good with faces. In fact..." Joann squints. "You look very familiar." For a moment, grave concern flashes on her face. Then her expression softens. "But... It's probably nothing."

Jackson cocked a brow, curiosity growing, when Joann mentioned that Jackson seemed familiar to her. As he saw her expression soften, he gave a chuckle and replied, "Well if I do have a doppleganger, I would surely like to know."

Before Joann is able to respond, the woman wearing the black suit and fish tie approaches Jackson. She looks briefly at Joann, then back at the man in front of her.

"Jackson Lee, correct?" She speaks in a crisp, hurried voice. "I'm Agent Francine Blanc, FBI. I have some questions for you."

She turns her head toward the coveralls on the counter. She blinks hard and says, "You can finish purchasing those. I will wait for you outside."

"Uhh... yeah... sure." Jackson replied to the FBI agent. Jackson slipped his sunglasses back on over his eyes and turned to Joann. "Charge the coveralls to Stakeford Ambulance, Joann. Oh, and before I go, would you mind placing an order for some plain white sheets and pillow cases? We're running short again." Jackson gave a friendly, if not nervous, smile to Joann. He took the coveralls, and left the building.

Tugging his hi-vis coat tight, he jammed his gloved fingers into his pockets before walking out to his truck. Unlocking the door, he tossed the coveralls into the back seat before locking the doors back up tight. He turned to look for the FBI agent who had questions for him, and soon found her. He approached her, his arms folded in front of him. "G'day, Agent Blanc," Jackson stiffly stated.

"Good day, Mr. Lee," Agent Blanc responds. She looks him over, from his shoes up to the hairs on his head. "The conversation we are about to have is strictly confidential and of high importance to you personally," she says. "I suggest, but do not require, that we speak in a location that is suitably private. You will be providing me with information on two cases I am involved in. You will provide me with information on the Stakeford murders, as well as information on the disappearance of your wife."

She pauses for a few seconds. The cold wind blows against them. "I would suggest the station," she resumes. She is frowning slightly, but her face does not show much in the way of emotion. "More for your sake than for mine. Fewer distractions, less noise. Agent Spencer is concerned with upsetting people. I am not. They can hear what they want. So, it is up to you."

Jackson eyed Agent Blanc with a measure of doubt from underneath his sunglasses. But he gave a nod of agreement. "Alright. Need a ride to the station, or do you have your own vehicle?" Jackson asked as he motioned to his truck, before folding his arms once again. In an attempt to ease his own apprehension of the FBI now being so involved in a way they had not before, Jackson spoke quietly, "I thank you for finally taking an interest in my wife's case. My plea's have fallen on deaf ears in your FBI. Though I find it a bit disgusting that it took a serial murderer in this town for you people to take notice... of anything."

Agent Blanc eyes Jackson's truck and listens to him. She immediately responds, "Sometimes the FBI chooses to have an eye but no mouth. The fact that you have not been contacted further does not mean that we are not interested in your wife's situation. It has merely been in our best interests not to contact you. I have a vehicle. Goodbye for now."

Agent Blanc uses her vehicle to drive to the station. She meets Jackson there and brings him to a private room. She closes the door and invites him to take a seat. She sits across from him.

"Mr. Lee, we can start with either case first. I am impartial either way, but I assume that you hold a preference for starting with the disappearance of your wife. We will start there, then. I would like you to tell me what you know of the case, from beginning to now. Assume I know nothing. Perhaps I really do know nothing. Be concise. We have too much to talk about to waste time on sidenotes." Agent Blanc leans forward slightly and folds her hands while she listens.

Re: Samson's (02/06, 11:05 am)

Post by Jackson_Lee on Sun Feb 21, 2016 7:37 pm

Jackson pulled a chair from against the wall, and sat on it such that he faced the table, but his chest was against the backrest of the chair, his arms folded on top. His sunglasses were off his face, sitting up on the top of his head as he gave a nod. "This all started after I'd left the Special Air Service. I was a civvie, doing my clinicals to become more than just a combat medic, but a full on paramedic. My wife and I were residing in our condo in Napier, when we started receiving phone calls. They were just dead air calls, until one night, while I was away from home, my wife answered a call. My wife said it was a voice on the other end uttering complete and utter gibberish, until that voice went and said 'you'll be in my grasp soon.'" Jackson shuddered visibly, that memory was still incredibly vivid. He cleared his throat and composed himself.

"After that night, we'd not received another call like that again. Soon after, my wife was accepted into graduate school for oceanic sciences in California while interning at an organization called NUMA, or the National Underwater and Marine Agency. I got her moved there just in time for the semester to start. Things were going well. We texted as much as we could, and talked via Skype on the regular about once a week. The time difference and such. A few weeks into the semester, all communication ceased. I was concerned, but wasn't entirely surprised, as I knew she was working on a stressful project for NUMA. She needed to concentrate on that. But I received a phone call from one of her professors, stating she had not attended class for those two days. While on that phone call, a rock was thrown through my window and landed in my living room. I dared not touch the rock, but a note upon it said 'we have her.' I called the authorities, and they contacted the state department of the US, who went to the FBI to launch an investigation."

Jackson leaned forward on the chair, his gaze more intent now as he gave a hard stare to Agent Blanc. "I've worked near and around bureaucracies, miss. I knew that my government and yours would take forever to mobilize resources to find my wife. So I left Napier, sold the condo, and came to America. I went in person to the FBI station in Los Angeles and got nowhere. When I got to my hotel, a phone call came through the hotel phone that my wife was now in the Midwest. I left that night, drove over the Rockies until I got through Colorado before I got a phone call, stating I should come to Stakeford, South Dakota. The calls suddenly ceased for months. I was about to leave until the murders started here. Then the calls started up again."

Jackson leaned back on the chair, his gaze falling to the table, awaiting Agent Blanc's reply. Jackson told his story as truthfully as he could. If there were omissions, he didn't recall what they were. His hard gaze lifted to Blanc, and said, "I've fought in hellacious places. I've been shot more than once. This lovely scar going down my face is a daily reminder of the 'fun' time I had once in Mogadishu. But I have never been more scared than I am right now, because of my wife. She has never harmed anyone. She has a passion for the ocean that rivals that of Jacque Cousteau. Elise did not deserve to be kidnapped. I've not received one ransom demand. This fucker keeps toying and tugging me along."

As Agent Blanc listens to Jackson's explanation, her face shows her focused attention and active analysis. She is clearly scrutinizing his every word he says right as he speaks it. When Jackson finishes, Agent Blanc is silent for about fifteen seconds, during which time she continues to look at him.

"It is my strict view, which has grown from experiences with wide varieties of people in both personal and second-hand capacities, that humans are uniquely secretive in nature," Blanc says. Her speech is slow, firm, and careful. "This is true for individuals, and it also manifests in their social machinations. I am drawn to these secrets, like a moth is drawn to the flame. On rare occasions, I meet people with similar personalities. There are a disproportionate number of us in government work, and we acknowledge the contradiction of our lives. We uncover the secrets of individuals while working under the guise of secrecy. Nothing is more secretive than the work we do, which is the uncovering of secrets."

Agent Blanc looks as though she takes a deep breath, but she makes no sound. She then resumes, "It is in order to uncover secrets that we make secrets. Your words were never in vain, Mr. Lee. We have been continuing our investigation into your wife's case for some time. I am telling you this because it is advantageous for me. I want your cooperation in this case. I want the credit for solving this serial murder case. Your wife's case is only important to me insofar as it is another big secret and that it may be connected to this case. I hope you understand, then, that I am not making a secret out of my intentions. I want your trust and cooperation for self-interested reasons, which conveniently coincide with man's conceptions of justice."

"Your wife kept secrets from you," Agent Blanc says. She looks at Jackson without sympathy, but also without a trace of coldness. "I am interested in your comment, in which you said that your wife did not deserve to be kidnapped. I am curious who you think does deserve to be kidnapped. An explanation of your criteria would satisfy a mild personal curiosity and a moderate professional curiosity. In any case."

For the first time since she began speaking, Agent Blanc takes her eyes off Jackson, so that she can look at the ceiling fan, which is gently rotating. "Have you noticed any similarities between these murder cases and the case with your wife?" She continues looking at the fan. "I am requesting that you report any similarities of any nature. If anyone reminds you of Elise, of yourself, or of the people who called you-- that would be of significant professional interest. Have you experienced similar feelings or thoughts?"

Agent Blanc looks back at Jackson. "And lastly, if you had to choose between saving your wife and stopping this killer, which would you choose?"

------------

Angelo comes running into Samson's. He looks frantically around. He is sweating profusely, and his face is red. He looks hard at Joann and asks hurriedly, "Do you see the rabbits? Do you see them?"

Angelo points at Samson Jr. and Reggie. Reggie looks back at him with a neutral expression, while Samson Jr. cracks a big smile and laughs quietly under his breath.

Re: Samson's (02/06, 11:05 am)

Post by Jackson_Lee on Sat Feb 27, 2016 4:01 am

Jackson listened thoughtfully to Blanc's words, but had to bite back the sudden raging tide of anger that burst from within when Agent Blanc audaciously asked him those questions. But he would answer.

"I'll cooperate, Agent Blanc," Jackson said, standing up. He pushed the chair aside, the feet of the chair scratching against the floor of the room they were in. He rested his palms on the table, and calmly stated, "But I shall not incriminate my wife. Nor any other friends I've made since coming here to Stakeford, and not myself either. I do not care about helping you advance your career. There are only two passions I have in this life of mine: the joy of my marriage to Elise, and saving lives. Our goal to save lives run parallel in this matter. You do it for your career. I do it because its a challenge. I'm a soldier, Blanc. I run towards the gun fire, not away from it."

Jackson grabbed the chair, and pulled it back to him, and sat down in it normally this time. "My wife wouldn't keep secrets from me. Classic husband denial, you'll say to that, but let me beat you to the punch. She had lain bare to me on the eve of our wedding all the skeletons in her closet, and those of her family's. I know she comes from money, but she was trying so much in vain to leave that life." Jackson leaned forward, and rested his elbows on the edge of the table. He looked up at the ceiling fan as well, before lifting a hand to his chin. While turning his head, he applied just enough pressure to his chin to cause his neck to crack 3 times. Three dull but audible pops. Jackson sighed, shaking his head gently as he looked to the floor. He then looked to Blanc and continued, "No one deserves to be kidnapped. But I don't give a shit about anyone else in comparison to my wife. I'd move heaven and earth to find her, but here in the USA, being a vigilante is bad." Jackson scoffed. "If there's any similarities, its this: Elise, my wife, gone. Another woman, Dr. Green, also gone. I admired Dr. Green because she and I worked together countless times to save lives at the med center. And I admire Elise because I love her and she's my wife. Also, why did the trail Elise's kidnappers left end here in Stakeford? What gives with that?"

Jackson mulled over Blanc's last question. It was a rather broiling one, but he kept a cool head as best he could. "I'm committed to saving my wife and ending this killer's spree in equal measure. Innocent people in this town are dying. My wife's being held HERE, in the same damned town as the serial killings are happening. This isn't coincidence that the kidnappers brought her here. Nor is it coincidence that I am also here."

Re: Samson's (02/06, 11:05 am)

Post by Hollis Brown on Sun Feb 28, 2016 10:50 am

For a brief moment, Agent Blanc's face betrayed emotion, for the first time in this entire conversation. She gave an ironic smirk. "I once knew very well a man who tried to tell me 'fate and coincidence figure largely into our lives,'" Agent Blanc says. She retracts the smile and clears her throat.

"Continue to update me on both situations," Agent Blanc says. "I want to know everything you know about these murders in Stakeford. I am also curious about Dr. Green's disappearance, and how that might be a part of either of the cases, or both, or neither. We must be careful not to look for meaning and connections where there are none. Superstition is not going to uncover secrets."

She nods a single time and then continues, "For what reassurance this provides, I would like to vocalize the thought that continues to cross my mind regarding your wife's disappearance. She is too valuable for them to kill. Whatever their motives are, it would seem as though she is still alive in well and in their custody. They have not asked for a ransom, so clearly what they are after has to do with Ms. Elise Lee herself. They would not recklessly throw that away. If it was a simple matter, they would have killed her already. We can carry forward mild confidence that they will preserve her for quite a long time. However, I am sure you are also preoccupied with the concern over what they will do with her once they are done with her. That is a fear I cannot allay."

Agent Blanc folds her hands. "I will continue to look for leads in your wife's case. However, understand that our primary focus is to solve the serial murder case. That is what I would like to talk about next, unless you have any further information to disclose about your wife's disappearance."

Agent Blanc pauses for a few seconds and then adds, "I have a witness's report that on multiple occasions you have been spotted at Julee's Bar with Cameron Johnson and Cliff Alset. On one occasion, you were spotted there with Brandy Smith, shortly before she became the perpetrator's next victim. While your free associations in your spare time are yours to decide upon, I acknowledge that this has created a moderate professional curiosity for me. The three of you have little in common. You hardly interacted with Cliff before the murders started, but more recently, you have frequently interacted with him and Cameron, a man who has no strong connections to this town and who curiously arrived right as the murders began. I would like you to explain calmly and clearly your involvement with these two, and briefly with Brandy Smith. And remember, the more you tell me about this case, the more I might be able to uncover about your wife's case. Help me help you, Mr. Jackson Lee."
